Preparing to participate in your first 5k? If you are planning on running, walking, or a combination of both, here are a few pointers to help you have a fantastic experience each time:

INSPIRATION

Whether you’re on a bling-collecting mission or running for your life (health), inspiration/motivation are half the battle to get through.

TRAIN

There’s very little chance that someone rolls out of bed and runs an official 5K or more. Depending on your fitness level, you may start out walking and graduate to more of a steady run. No matter how you do it, know that there are tons of apps and running groups available to help you get physically and mentally ready. Also, don’t forget to stretch those muscles, both pre- and post-workouts…your body will thank you!

HYDRATE

It is vital to work on hydration daily, but it should be even more of a priority the week leading up to race day. I hydrate with a combination of plain water, fruit-infused water, and coconut water.

BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING (i.e. WEATHER)

By “anything,” I mean ANYTHING! My most recent race day was a total rainy wash-out. It was a “rain or shine” run, so the show did go on. In listening to the forecast, I was nerve-wracked but decided to kick the excuses and hit the pavement despite the conditions. It did take a LOT of mental toughness, however. It helped that I dressed in layers – the outermost gear being a water-proof, lightweight jacket with a hood. Some runners chose to wear rain ponchos, but all of that plastic drives me nuts. Do what works for you!

I still can’t believe I ran in the pouring rain! A check off the bucket list for sure!

DOWNLOAD A PLAYLIST

Never underestimate the power of music; it moves people…literally. Invest in some earbuds and download some of your favorite workout tunes to get the adrenaline going and help you push through workouts/races. My workout playlist consists of such a broad spectrum of musical genres that it cracks me up just thinking about it. Select tracks that take you through all phases – warm-up, cardio-circuit, and cool-down.

PROPER STORAGE

Something embarrassing that happened to me over the weekend was that I had nothing to indeed store my items in. Luckily, my jacket had a gigantic front pocket for my keys and cell phone, but there wasn’t much room for all the sweet giveaways that I collected throughout the day. I know that people joke that fanny packs aren’t cold, but I sure as heck could have used one that day as extra storage for water, snacks, etc.! Drawstring backpacks are amazing as well! Not quite sure where my head was that morning…

POST-WORKOUT PAMPERING

After you’ve run the big race, it’s time to pat yourself on the back and give your body a much-needed break. Foam rollers are excellent for getting the kinks out of those sore/fatigued muscles. Many also choose to make an appointment with their local masseuse after vigorous training, which I believe is a fantastic idea.

HAVE FUN

An essential step in the process is to have fun! You’re going through great lengths for your health, and it should be admired and enjoyed!
