I looked down at my chipped nails (yet again) and rolled my eyes out of sheer irritation with myself. Completely overwhelmed with having to juggle work and life had undoubtedly been getting the best of me, to the point of not knowing whether I was coming or going. And if we’re completely transparent, this wasn’t just about the chipped nails. It was the feeling that I had somehow “let myself go” or let my personal needs take a backseat to everything and everyone. The constant headaches wouldn’t go away, and I was pretty sure that they were due to stress or not drinking nearly enough water. It was beyond time to book that medical visit!

Sound familiar? More than we’d like to admit, a lot of women are guilty of this – and not just mothers!

All women alike should make it their business to ensure that self-care is a top priority. We deserve to look and feel good, as well as live long, healthy lives. Life can get hectic (that’s life), but if you’re not careful, neglecting your needs for far too long can wind up, causing more harm than good.

When was the last time you’ve taken a “time-out” for self? Better yet, what are some appointments women in general should be making, and how often?

MEDICAL

  • Annual Physical (annually)

During these visits, your primary care physician will check your overall state of health – blood pressure, weight, any physical or mental concerns, as well as perform comprehensive bloodwork.

  • Gynecologist (annually)

Annual pap smears for women are so crucial. They are also very efficient in detecting cervical cancer and any other issues that need further attention.

  • Dentist (every 6 months)

Stay ahead of gum disease, cavities and oral cancer by heading to the dentist every 6 months as recommended for an exam to keep teeth and gums healthy.

  • Eye Exam (annually)

If your health insurance includes eye exams, they are usually free annually. This is certainly something you may want to look into, especially if experiencing vision or eye issues.

  • Dermatologist (annually)

If you’re dealing with unusual changes in the skin, it is probably best to consult with a dermatologist. This would be the perfect time to get advice on how to obtain healthier skin, as well as undergo a screening to check for skin cancers.

PAMPERING

A little pampering doesn’t have to break the bank. On a budget? Try some DIY methods! The key is to focus on YOU (and fixing that chipped nail polish). You will be surprised that something as simple as sitting in a cafe or bookstore with a good read and some headphones will do a body good! Put your creativity to the test!

  • Massage (once per month)
  • Hair & Nails (once or twice per month)
  • Quiet Time (30 – 60 minutes daily)
  • Sleep (need we say more?)
  • Social  (connect with friends and family)

LIFESTYLE

  • Exercise (At least 3-4 times per week)

When you look good, you feel good. More importantly, many diseases can be curbed through healthy diet and exercise. You only get one body; take good care of it.
