With cold and flu season on the horizon, it is only right that we discuss some natural remedies to combat the ugly viruses entering our homes from the children’s’ daycares, schools, our workplaces, on public transportation, etc. It can, at times, seem almost unavoidable. We just mentioned that the common cold is a virus, and with viruses of endless strains, it is not curable. Nor is there a way to make a vaccine as done with the flu. Our bodies instinctively react to fighting off these viruses through symptoms like coughing, sneezing, congestion, sore throat, etc. Over-the-counter medications are geared towards relieving general discomfort stemming from the symptoms as you work to fight off the virus but can leave you feeling loopy and all the more fatigued.

Which brings us to our point of sharing natural home remedies to get you back on your feet. Yes, ones that you can create right at home!

Steam

A hot shower, steam room or DIY steam bath in a bowl will help to clear those nasal passages and chest congestion. You will also find that adding a bit of eucalyptus oil to the steam bath will increase the overall benefits as you breathe the steam deeply for about 10-15 minutes.

Stay Hydrated and Exercise

Stock up on water, chicken broth, herbal teas and fresh fruits for smoothies on deck. Hydration will help break up the mucous, as well as keep you hydrated.

Here is a quick natural hot tea recipe for you to concoct, as needed, according to your taste buds. Just add lemon, honey, ginger, and turmeric….that’s it!

It is also important to stay active! One great way to get the blood flowing and relieve stress is through yoga and mediation drills.

Saline Spray or Neti Pot

This is an easy and effective way to tackle nasal congestion. Also, be sure to blow your nose as often as needed to prevent mucous build-up, which can lead to unwanted sinus pressure and earaches.

Wash Your Hands

It sounds like a broken record when anyone says it, but hand-washing is so necessary for preventing the spread of germs. Encourage children to wash properly with soap and water, as well as how to sneeze into their elbows instead of their hands – this goes for adults too!
