Introduce yourself to the Mocha Health community. Tell us, who is Tamika Harden?

I am a certified personal trainer and body contouring expert. For over 15 years, I have helped 100’s of women get in shape and reach fitness goals that once seemed impossible. My passion and excitement for fitness are contiguous. My goal is to help people fall in love with self-care.

As a fitness and wellness advocate, what was it like for you to hear that you had tested positive for COVID-19?

I was shocked. Many of us were led to believe that the novel Coronavirus affected only older people, and those with pre-existing medical conditions. However, we quickly learned that this virus does not discriminate and people of all ages should take the necessary precautions to protect themselves (and others) from the virus.

What were the first signs and symptoms you noticed that prompted you to get tested?

When I first experienced signs, I assumed it was the flu. As my symptoms progressed I began my quest to get tested. Within days, it felt as though I had been hit by a truck. I could not get out of bed, had no appetite, could not smell nor taste, and experienced a heavy and rapidly-recurring cough. The cough was so frequent and powerful, that it felt as though my chest were vibrating – a very uncomfortable feeling.

What were the steps you took to begin fighting the infection?

I used over-the-counter medication to help reduce fever and cough. I stayed hydrated, increased my vitamin consumption, and juiced fruits and vegetables. I rested as much as needed. As soon as my body felt well enough, I resumed all lifestyle practices that have kept me healthy for the past 15+ years. I started out gradually with light physical movement. My physical health helped my body fight COVID-19 and now, more than ever is the time to practice a healthy lifestyle and help others with the process.

With regard to healthcare, what did access to quality care look like for you before, during, and post-diagnosis?

Due to a lack of testing sites and medical equipment in my area, I was denied twice for testing. I was successful on my 3rd attempt, which was about 10 days following the onset of symptoms. One could only imagine what may have happened during those 10 days if my body wasn’t fit to fight COVID-19. And make no mistake, seemingly healthy people struggle to fight off the virus as well.

After learning I tested positive for the virus, my greatest challenge was protecting my 2 children and nanny. I had to monitor my family daily for symptoms, all while trying to maintain social-distancing while in the home as instructed by top health officials. While keeping my family safe was a challenge, by God’s grace, we are all doing well now. Quarantining for 14 days after testing positive meant not even being able to leave my home for essential items. It is important to have a strong support system around you in these times to stand in the gap for you.

Describe your COVID-19 recovery experience.

Exercising and any physical movement was harder than it ever was for me post-COVID-19, but I safely attempted as much as I could.

How has the pandemic impacted your business?

Along with several other industries, the fitness industry was hit hard. I was forced to close my business for 7 months. Experiencing lost wages, my business and financial stability were in shambles. I had to have faith that things would (and will) get better. There were many days where I felt completely hopeless and wanted to give up. But then, I thought about my clients and all the people who look to me for guidance during this trying time. Knowing that people were counting on me, I quickly shifted my business virtually. With very little time to prepare, I began to teach 3-4 classes per day virtually to hold my fitness community accountable. This shift also helped me to stay hopeful and not give up on my own personal battles.

This pandemic has impacted my family, finances, and business. Even on my hardest days, I knew I had to wipe my tears and continue to fight. I also had something to fight for – my life and my children’s lives were spared. We are safe and, for this, I am extremely grateful. Financial gains can come and go, but you only get one life. Spiritually, I have gained more gratitude and a deeper understanding of my purpose. My purpose is to help people, and I want to do everything in my power to fulfill it.

What advice would you offer to those looking to return to normalcy after a pandemic?

I recommend seeking testing and medical attention immediately to anyone who becomes infected with the virus or feels symptoms. Following precautionary measures and staying proactive is essential. It is important to focus more on the things we can control and less on the things we cannot. We can all choose to take collective action now and begin to heal and live in a healthier society. Take heed to the guidelines of trusted public health officials, and set the continued intention of keeping those around you safe. You never know how strong you are until strong is the only choice you have. And while some may be on the road to recovery from COVID-19 (studies are outlining its lingering effects), many have not (and will not) recover fully. Keep everything in perspective, and take nothing for granted.
